We highly recommend pre or post cruise stay in Rome, Italy
Rome is served by the Fumincino or Leonardo da Vinci airport of Rome.
The airport is located 16 miles southwest of Rome. It is also located within a forty-five minute drive of the port that serves Rome; Civitavecchia.
Hotels:
There is a very wide range of hotels in terms of size of hotels, location and price points. Please contact us for recommendations.
Restaurants:
Rome has a wide range of restaurants from casual to formal restaurants. Breakfast is usually included as part of a hotel stay. For lunch we recommend dining at neighborhood cafes/restaurants and avoiding tourist spots.
We do recommend taking some formal tours of Rome.
If you have limited time, consider taking a highlights tour to get an overview of Rome.
For longer stays we recommend a range of tours including walking tours with a small organized group as well as private tours.
Places to visit include:
Vatican Museums. The Vatican Museum is home to as much art work as the Louvre in Paris. The museums include the Sistine Chapel. If time allows consider a daytime tour of the museums followed up by an evening tour.
The Colosseum. This is a must see. It was once home of gladiators, criminals and lions where they all fought for their lives. In recent years the tours the underground area has been opened to the public.
The Roman Forum. During ancient time, this was the most famous area of Rome. We highly recommend a visit and as you view the area you need to use some imagination as to what life was like back then.
The Spanish Steps. This is a popular site for a short visit and a photograph. Most tourists enjoy a walk up and down the stops.
The Trevi Fountain. Similarly, this is also a popular tourist stop and another area to take photographs. Many tourists will throw coins into the water.
The Pantheon. Although the Pantehon is over 2,000 years old it is in relatively good shape.
The Catacombs of San Callisto and San Sebastiano. Both of these catacombs are extensive and include multi-layered netowrks of passages.
Vittoriano (Monument to Victor Emmanuel II). This memorial was built to mark the wining of Italian unity and to honor its first King. It was built between 1885 and 1911. It includes the Tom of the Unknown Soldier and also houses a museum.
There are hundred of other places to visit around Rome. Like any large city you could spend weeks or even months here and not see it all. Try to pace yourself so that you don’t run from place to place. Rome deserves multiple visits so this is a good excuse to revisit the city either with a land stay or as part of a cruise.
