For those considering A long voyage of several weeks or more one of the questions asked often is how to manage bill paying and finances while away from home.
With the advent of the Internet, this is so much easier than in year’s past, but still requires preparation and a lot of thought.
We recommend reviewing all of your monthly recurring bills to determine how you can pay them automatically. In most cases you will find that you can either automatically pay them with your credit card or from your checking account. In turn, you can pay your credit cards automatically with your checking account.
Should you have a bill that cannot be paid automatically, determine if you could pre-pay it.
We have eliminated all of our paper bills, with very few exceptions and receive them soft copy via the e-mail. This allows us to track all of our bills while we are away starting with viewing the actual bill and then confirming when they have been paid.
Likewise, we view our bank and other related financial accounts on-line and we can transfer money between accounts via the Internet.
We do review our accounts regularly and that includes reviewing our credit card accounts daily to check for potential fraud. We take with us telephone numbers for all vendors and all credit card companies and financial institutions should we need to contact them by telephone. Be sure to not only take the toll free number, but the direct telephone number because the call will not be completed from most places outside of your home country.
