P, E, O, P, L, E - LET'S CONTINUE WITH ENJOYMENT-
EATING RIGHT
One of the joys of cruising is eating. When it comes to eating cruise lines are offering more and more choices with each passing year.
Our experience is that food will vary by cruise line and even within a ship can vary based on the dining venue. For example, on mainstream cruise lines in their main dining areas the food is more like what you might find at a banquet facility whereas at their specialty restaurants which carry an extra charge beyond the cruise fare, the food is more what you might find at a nice restaurant.
In general, luxury lines provide the finest cuisine in both their regular dining venues and their specialty restaurants. Many of the specialty restaurants tend to be more intimate and often each of these restaurants serves a specific type of cuisine such as French, Italian, Steakhouse, Japanese, Chinese types of cuisine. Luxury lines also offer more opportunity to change up most food items to your liking and with 24 hours notice you can normally order special items prepared the way you would like.
In the earlier days of cruising food was abundant both in terms of the number of courses served, to the amount of food served for each course to all of those late night buffets. With many passengers being more health conscious and to avoid the unnecessary costs of wasted food, these days there are far less evening buffets than in years past, portions are smaller, and depending on cruise line there is more emphasis on including healthy choices on the menu.
In the end, for those interested in splurging you can easily do that. After all, a cruise is your vacation. At the same time for those interested in eating healthier choices of food that is available as well.
In our early years of cruising we did gain weight on each cruise and we did splurge whether that was attending late night buffets, or ordering dessert with each meal or having all the courses or eating high calorie food. We changed our approach to cruising as we sailed on longercruises, including World Cruises of 100+ days. We realized that on a seven day cruise if we gained 5 pounds but took the same approach on a much longer cruise that this could result in a large gain of weight.
While we will indulge to some extent we do eat on a ship as if we are staying at a health spa at land. We enjoy healthy breakfasts, having salad entrees for lunch and at dinner eating healthy including lots of seafood, salad, vegetables and fruit.
The good news is there are lots of options and there are many choices and cruising provides the opportunity to try food items that you not only enjoy, but also provides the opportunity to try new items that you have never had. Should you enjoy an item there is always the opportunity to order more of it, and if you do not like a particular item you can order something else instead.
